The trip

There's a stretch of a couple weeks every spring when the Hill Country goes blue. Bluebonnets, mostly, mixed with Indian paintbrush and pink evening primrose, all along the shoulders of the ranch roads. Families pull over to take the annual kid-in-the-flowers photo. It's one of the nicest things about living here, and plenty of Texans have never gone looking for it properly.

This is our close-to-home trip, and the one we'd recommend if you've never traveled with a group before. It's short, it's easy, and nobody has to drive, which matters a lot when the itinerary includes a few wineries.

A note on luck: how good the flowers are depends on the fall and winter rain. In a wet year, the fields are wall-to-wall. In a dry year, they're patchy. We scout the routes the week before and send you a flower report, and if one area is thin, we go where they're blooming instead.

Highlights

  • The fields at Muleshoe Bend on Lake Travis, often the best in the area
  • The 13-mile Willow City Loop, at a slow crawl with the windows down
  • Sunset from the top of Enchanted Rock
  • A wine afternoon along US 290, with a designated driver who's actually designated
  • A brisket lunch in Llano on the way home

Day by day

Day 1

Austin to Fredericksburg

We leave Austin at 9am and head to Muleshoe Bend, where in a good year the slope down to Lake Travis is a solid carpet of blue. Lunch in Marble Falls, then the back roads through Burnet and Llano County, stopping whenever the flowers ask us to. Two nights in Fredericksburg.

Day 2

Willow City Loop & Enchanted Rock

The Willow City Loop is a narrow road through private ranch land. You stay on the road and you don't open any gates, and in return you get some of the prettiest country in the state. After lunch on Main Street, we go out to Enchanted Rock, a pink granite dome that climbs about 425 feet. It's steep, but short, and the view from the top is huge. If you'd rather not climb, there are easier trails around the base.

Day 3

Wine Road & Luckenbach

A slow day. The LBJ Ranch and the Texas White House in the morning, then three wineries along 290. We pick the ones with porches. Late afternoon in Luckenbach for whatever picking circle is going under the oaks. Dinner in Fredericksburg, which still has more German food than you'd guess.

Day 4

Llano & home

Back via Llano for an early barbecue lunch at a pit where you choose your meat straight off the smoker. Then a different set of back roads home, arriving in Austin around 4pm.

Good to know

About that old rumor: picking bluebonnets isn't actually against state law. But most of the good fields are on private land or in parks where you can't pick, and trampling a patch to get the photo ruins it for the next family. Step carefully, and watch for fire ants. They love bluebonnet patches as much as we do.
